20 April - Finance Ministers from Francophone LICs Meet in Washington

MM17For the past seven years, finance ministers from low-income Francophone countries have met in the margins of the Annual Meetings of the IMF and the World Bank to discuss financing for development. Under the aegis of the International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF), DFI helped convene the latest meeting in Washington on 20th April.

Chaired for the first time by Mr. François Maurice Gervais RAKOTOARIMANANA, Minister of Finance and Budget of Madagascar and co-chaired by Mr. Ousmane Alamine MEY, Minister of Finance of Cameroon, the meeting was an opportunity for the new chair country to highlight the importance of this ministerial network in finding solutions to issues faced by member countries to finance their development plans. It expressed the wish to develop the topics of discussion and reinforce the monitoring of international institutions’ and donors’ actions to ensure that member countries’ technical assistance and policy needs are met.

In the spirit of this approach, ministers exchanged with the World Bank and France on the issue of taxation for domestic resource mobilization and heard about their wish to consult Francophone countries in the process of revising their assistance plans. Countries then shared their experiences on the theme of PPPs which is the second priority issue for the network.
